Career Change Testimonials
People Are Talking About VocationVacations® Career Mentorship Experiences!IT Software Professional and Stay-At-Home Mom Become Chocolatiers
Chris Farrow, a 42-year-old, 20-year policy and compliance director with a software development company, and his wife Darcie, a 41-year-old former pre-school special education assistant and now stay-at-home mother of four, had always wanted to work together in a business, but they hadn’t been able to land on the right match. In 2005, Chris started bringing gifts of chocolate to his family when he returned from business trips to his home in Monument, CO. These gifts turned out to be the catalyst that would lead them to that right match. They began making chocolates for friends and exploring what it would take to become a chocolatier.
Chris did market research, attended and graduated from the professional chocolatier program at Ecole Chocolat and then visited and talked with chocolatiers and shop owners to gather more information. Chris and Darcie then determined they needed some hands-on experience to bring, as Darcie says, “reality to earth”. They decided each of them would take a chocolatier VocationVacation.
Chris joined Will Gustwiller, owner of Eclipse Chocolat in San Diego, CA, and Darcie traveled to Portland, OR, to spend her VocationVacation with Jack and Iva Elmer, owners of JaCiva’s. These experiences played a tremendous role in our decision to move forward with the creation of our own line of artisan chocolates,” say Chris and Darcie.
In August 2010, the Farrow’s launched The Art of Chocolate, LLC that focuses on made-to-order, high-end chocolate truffles and confections via web-based retail, local wholesale and catering. Chris continues to work with the software development company, but is looking ahead to the day he can devote all his time to their new venture. “It is a balancing act to find the time to do everything, but we love our new venture and are excited about the future,” they say.
Human Resources Professional Becomes Soap Maker
Diane Milczarek of Watsonville, CA, was in her fifties when she decided it was time to pursue a second career – one that would give her the opportunity to be creative and allow her to be her own boss. Her 13-year career as a human resources professional at a local school district was becoming increasingly stressful trying to do more with less during the down economy. To begin exploring the “what next?” phase of her life, Diane voluntarily took a cut in her work week allowing her a day a week to explore possibilities and pursue her new passion for making soap. Diane had been watching the VocationVacations web site for years. “I thought what a great idea this was, but none of the mentorships on the list clicked with me at that time,” remembers Diane. When she returned to the VocationVacations web site in June of 2010, she was thrilled to see there was a career mentorship in soap making and retailing. She signed up immediately.
Diane traveled to Bellingham, WA, for a soap maker/retailer VocationVacation with Anne-Marie Faiola, owner of Otion. “Anne-Marie made me feel confident in pursuing a career as a soap maker. She was very positive and goal oriented,” Diane says. “We went over basic soap making methods, and she helped me tweak some of my soap recipes. But even more importantly, she helped from a business perspective relative to things like branding, retailing, online sales, etc..”
“I returned home and talked to my husband about my experience and my plan to create a business out of my soap making,” she explains. “He was very supportive. The next week I gave three weeks notice and quit my job.” That was on July 15, 2010. “I gave myself three months to get my business started and to have a sufficient supply of soap available for sale.” She began working on a business plan and attending to all the details involved in opening a new business – licensing, permits, building a web site, creating business cards, etc.
Only a week past her October 15 deadline, Diane had her web site up and running and Garden Lane Soaps was launched. At this point, her sales are primarily web based, but already her product is in two local stores. “VocationVacations was great for where I was in the process of determining if soap making was a viable career for me,” concludes Diane. “But, an experience like this is helpful no matter if you are just beginning to think about a new career, or ready to take the next step to making that career a reality.”
VOCATIONVACATIONS ALUM BECOMES WINE BAR OWNER
When she was laid off again from a high-tech position in spring of 2008, Beth decided to take some business classes and get serious about the possibility of opening a wine bar. “I wanted to create a space where people could come together, relax, connect and enjoy their surroundings,” Beth explains. “And an opportunity that would feed my entrepreneurial and creative nature and fill Pacifica’s need for a fun and upscale meeting place to enjoy a fine glass of wine.”
Her classes were useful but theoretical. Then Beth read an article about VocationVacations and the opportunity to get some hands-on experience. In early 2009, she decided to take a wine bar owner VocationVacation with Beth Boston, owner of Every Day Wine in Portland, OR. “Beth demystified the industry and made me realize I could do it,” shares Beth. “She helped me understand this was not ‘rocket science’; distilled everything down to basic principles; and gave me a down-to-earth foundation on which to build a successful wine bar business.”
Returning from her VocationVacation, Beth was energized and ready to make her dream of owning a wine bar come true. She hired local contractors to transform a generic office space into “Tuscany meets the beach” with a bar that seats 50 people. In April of 2010, A Grape in the Fog, opened with, what Beth calls, a “faux” opening to test the waters and get any “wrinkles” out followed by a “soft” opening a few months later and then a grand opening in October 2010.
A Grape in the Fog features nearly 30 California wines, craft style beers, creative bar food and locally made desserts. Beth now has five employees and has had an outstanding response from the community. “This has been an interesting journey for me. I have realized you don’t have to reinvent yourself. Take the experience you have and go for it. I have learned not to sabotage my dreams and to envision myself jumping out a plane knowing there is a parachute to catch me,” says Beth.
Electrical Engineer Becoming Country Music Songwriter
Bob Paterno was a successful
electrical engineer in his 30’s in Dallas, TX, when he decided to take
control of his life and explore his musical talents – he had been
writing songs since he was 14. He continued to wonder what it would
take to be a songwriter.
Bob headed to Nashville, TN, to get an insider’s look into the world of a successful country music songwriter to determine if he could make a living doing something he really loved. After his hands-on VocationVacations career mentorship in Nashville with Thom Shepherd, combined with career consultation, it took a month for Bob to stop listening to the part of him that was telling him, “I can’t be a songwriter, that’s crazy.” When he did, he gave six weeks notice and quit his job in August 2007.
Since then, Bob has been learning the craft of country music songwriting. He travels to Nashville every month to pitch songs to publishers and producers and to co-write with other songwriters. “I write about 100 songs per year, and I’m working harder than I ever have. But putting in long hours is much easier to do when you love what you’re doing,” says Bob.

An Architect and Air Traffic Controller Become Bakery Owners
In 2005, at the ages of 42 and 30, George
Kelley, an air traffic controller, and Paul Holje, an architect, decided
it was time to finally figure out what they really wanted to be when
they grew up. Both George and Paul loved to cook, and since there were no bakeries in their hometown of Grand Forks, ND, the idea of becoming bakery owners was very appealing. They spent time brainstorming, doing research and developing a business plan. However, they realized all of this was theoretical. If they were going to commit to transitioning to this new career and reinventing themselves, they needed to see what it was really like to own and manage a bakery. With the help of VocationVacations, they found an established, successful baker who provided hands-on, career mentorship experience and confirmed many of their ideas and steered them away from others.
In May of 2006 they opened Dakota Harvest Bakers, an artisan bakery and café in Grand Forks. The community enthusiastically responded. The business went from conception to operation in a year and a half, and, in 2009, George and Paul opened their second location in Grand Forks. Currently, they are looking at regional expansion for Dakota Harvest through franchising options.
Insurance Claims Manager To Become Digital Video/Film Producer
Sandy Huddle of Philadelphia,
PA, worked in the insurance business for 19 years. In college, she had
dreamed of becoming a television producer and had taken classes.
However, personal circumstances caused her to abandon her dream. In September 2005, Sandy decided she wanted to dust that dream off, but was fearful the television production industry may not be as she remembered….or her interest not as strong. She enlisted the help of a VocationVacations mentor to provide her an inside look into the industry. She liked what she saw. She enrolled in classes at the Art Institute of Philadelphia and is on target to complete the program in 2010. During this time, she has also gained experience at a local PBS station, worked on some student film projects and squeezed in some writing classes.
Sandy’s transition to a new career has been a well-thought out, step-by step journey designed to meet her immediate employment needs while preparing her for a bright new future. Her commitment, determination and patience have paid off. The culmination of her journey is in sight, and Sandy is ready for a new career and a new chapter in her life.
Nurse Becomes Horse Trainer
Connie Madison had been a nurse in the Twin Cities in Minnesota all her adult life. As she approached retirement, she started talking more and more about her childhood fascination with horses, and she began to think about what it would take to become a horse trainer. Her husband decided to help her find out through hands-on experience and career consultation. He sent her on a horse trainer VocationVacation at Springwater Station (http://vocationvacations.com/DreamJobHolidays/springwater-station.php), a horse breeding and training facility in Oregon. Connie’s fascination with horses was rekindled. She came to the realization that working with horses was what she wanted to do for her second career.
This realization required the couple to reset their course. They sold their home on a golf course in Florida – where they thought they would retire – and bought a horse farm in northern Minnesota.
Right now Connie focuses on horse training, but in the long term she would like to become a horse breeder. She also boards horses for friends who, like her, had always wanted horses as children but hadn’t been able to pursue that desire until later in life.
Software Consultant Becomes Yoga Studio Owner
Veronica had been introduced to the practice of yoga in her youth and years later her love for the practice was rekindled. She began to think about how she could turn her passion for yoga into a lifestyle. With the help of VocationVacations, she was able to spend time with the owner of Yoga Vida in Austin, TX, being mentored on the good, the bad and the hard realities of the business. “By walking in his shoes I was able to clarify my future direction and understand whether my passion could be translated into a life’s work,” says Veronica.
Veronica returned to San Jose, imbued with the confidence to turn her back on her long-held career. She threw her heart and soul into opening her own yoga studio. She developed a business and marketing plan, lined up all her credentials, and proceeded to form a team of teachers who embodied the same ideals.
Nine months later, Veronica opened the doors of Downtown Yoga Shala in San Jose to the Silicon Valley community. “It was a leap of faith, but one done with my eyes wide open and with my heart the right place,” says Veronica.
Supermarket Frozen Food Manager Becoming Brew Master
In February 2008, Mark Peffers (Fishkill, NY)
woke up to the fact that he needed a change. He had been in the
supermarket business for 21 years, since he was 15 years old, and he was
tired of it. He wanted to do something he was passionate about – he
wanted to learn how to become a brew master.Mark decided to take his beer making hobby to a higher level. He began to read books and explore the availability of classes on the art of beer making. He had lots questions and lots of enthusiasm and needed to find a way to start moving in the right direction. That direction came from an established brew master and VocationVacations career mentor at The Gilded Otter in New Paltz, NY, who spent time showing Mark everything about beer making from “production to tap”. He came away even more excited and convinced this was the career for him.
Career consultation and hands-on experience gave Mark the confidence to begin taking classes and making plans to transition to a new career as a brew master. Less than 18 months after his mentoring experience, his mentor offered Mark a part-time job as his assistant at The Gilded Otter. Mark is on his way to living his dream!
Marketing Executive Becomes Concierge
In 2007, Cory Chacon, New York
City, was in her 30’s and had spent more than 15 years as an
international marketing executive for all the major record labels.
During those years, she had traveled extensively and had become
intrigued with the hotel business. So intrigued, she decided she wanted
to learn more about the hotel industry and career opportunities in the
field and what it would take to become a concierge. With the shift in the music industry, Cory was laid off and began to study hospitality marketing at the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University. But she realized she also needed to be exposed to what it was really like to work in the hotel industry. She wanted to put what she had learned from being a frequent traveler and what she was learning in the classroom into action.
She got that chance by spending a couple of days on a VocationVacations career mentorship with the manager of the Hotel Monaco in Chicago, and following a career transition plan that combined mentorship with career consultation. She came away even more convinced the hospitality business was the right match for her. With the help of her mentor, she was able to secure an interview at a property owned by the same hotel group and was hired as a concierge at The Muse Hotel in the heart of New York City.
Financial Services Professionals Become Vineyard Owners
Husband and wife Bill Sweat and Donna Morris
had spent 25 years in the financial services industry in Boston, MA.
For ten of those years, they had been putting money into what they
called their “dream job fund” to be used when the right opportunity
arose for them to run a business after they retired. Eventually, they
decided to explore what it would take to become vineyard owners.Savvy business people, they began doing their homework to determine if this was the right move for them and how they might make it happen. Wanting to "kick the tires" before they jumped in, Donna and Bill spent two days on a VocationVacation career mentorship at Stone Wolf Vineyards in McMinnville, OR. This experience, along with career consultation, provided them the information they needed to make an informed decision regarding their future.

Financial Services Marketing Professional Becomes Comedian and Corporate Humorist
By the time she was in her
thirties, Sue Burton-Kirdahy’s (Marshfield, MA) passion for her
successful career in the financial services industry was waning. Changes
in her company provided the impetus for Sue’s decision to leave her
position and explore new careers. Sue first decided to explore what it would be like to be a television producer. She started networking, scheduling informational interviews and experienced a hands-on career mentorship at a television production company which made her realize this wasn’t the job for her.
Her interest in comedy sent her in another direction. She connected with a motivational humorist, who gave her sound advice and guidance, and she also spent two days on a VocationVacation being mentored by stand-up comedian, Dan Nainan, and learning what goes into becoming a comedian. This experience felt right and a good fit for her talents and personality.
Through networking, career consultation, hands-on experiences and self-exploration, Sue discovered not just a new career but a calling. Today, she is happy and fulfilled with her new “portfolio career” which includes working as a corporate humorist, stand-up comic and speaker.
Consultant Becomes Public Relations Firm Owner
Karleen Savage (Boise, Idaho) was a 15-year
consulting veteran, mother of seven and a student going to school to
earn a marketing degree. She realized she needed some focus to
determine where she wanted to go in this field and decided to pursue
becoming a public relations professional. However, Karleen wanted to
"test drive" a career in public relations before taking the leap.In 2006, Karleen got her "test drive" at Richmond Public Relations in Seattle, WA. During her two-day career mentorship, Karleen had the opportunity to actually participate in client activities and learn about both the creative and business sides of the agency.
The experience helped her make the decision to start her own public relations firm. In 2007, Karleen opened Code R.E.D Public Relations, a full-service public relations agency in Boise. “The second week I was in business I got my first client and within the first eight months, I had 18 clients,” remembers Karleen. The agency has taken off and has been successful beyond Karleen's expectations. It was definitely the right move for Karleen.

Annemarie signed up to take a VocationVacations career mentorship at Pink Cupcake in Mt. Vernon, OH. It was just what she needed. She came away with the confidence that her baking skills and business sense were up to the challenge. Classroom knowledge, hands-on experience and career consultation helped Annemarie follow her dream.

She took a winemaker VocationVacation with Wölffer Estate Vineyard in Sagaponack, New York. She came away with the realization that, although she did not want to be a winemaker, she definitely wanted to work in the wine industry.

had been a nurse for more than 20 years. Although quite successful in
her field, Darlene longed to pursue a new career that would give her the
chance to be more creative. She had always loved cooking, baking and

Software Marketing Professional Becomes Bridesmaid Boutique Owner
In her mid-forties, Debra Chin, Los Gatos, CA, had
spent more than ten years as a software marketing professional.
Although successful in her field, Debra became increasingly interested
in exploring a new career - a career that would leverage her
entrepreneurial spirit and feed her passion for fashion and her interest
in becoming a style expert. Debra began talking with people in the retail fashion business and developing a business and marketing plan. However, she wasn’t sure which direction she wanted to take. In 2007, Debra took a VocationVacation with expert fashion stylist Katie Rice Jones. During those two days, Debra learned a great deal about many facets of the industry, including the opportunities in the bridal fashion industry.
She put this idea in the back of her mind. In 2008, her own experience brought her to the realization that there was a need for fashion conscious experts who could bring style and quality to bridesmaid dresses – dresses bridesmaids want to wear, rather than have to wear. As a bridesmaid, she had a great experience with Bella Bridesmaid, a national bridesmaid-exclusive boutique. When Debra discovered the company offered franchises, she knew she had found an opportunity to combine her financial and marketing skills and fashion sense. In 2009, she opened her own Bella Bridesmaid franchise in Los Gatos and is enjoying her new career and the challenging, but rewarding, life of an entrepreneur.
Management Consultant Becomes Travel Writer
Craig Zabransky’s choice of career had always been
influenced by his love of travel. Consequently, in 1998 he accepted a
position as a management consultant in the financial services industry
because of the global reach of this position and the opportunity to
travel. While on a needed sabbatical from this job and his work travel, Craig realized he did not want to return to the corporate world. Instead, he wanted to explore other career possibilities that were solely based on travel. He decided to work with a career coach. He quickly realized his future vocation - travel writer.
Challenging times in the financial services industry resulted in Craig being laid off from his job. He knew this was his chance for change and decided to take a VocationVacation to explore travel writing further. He traveled to Ft Collins, Colorado, to spend time with veteran travel writer Ron Stern and learn the in’s and out’s of the profession.
“Ron provided me with a plethora of resources, cited his own examples and most importantly taught me how I needed to diversify my income. The two days allowed me to decide if travel writing was the right career for me. It was,” says Craig.
Today, Craig is a published travel writer and is living his dream job. He has happily replaced his old corporate business card with one he designed himself and bears this message: “Writing tales of travel and adventure to inspire others to take and make adventure in their lives."
IT Account Manager Becomes Artist/Promoter/Curator
In January 2010 during the worst recession in US
history, Robert Vo, San Francisco, made a bold decision to quit his
eleven-year career in the IT industry. He had reached a point in his
corporate job where there were no interesting challenges, and he felt
unfulfilled and burnt out. After going through intense career
evaluation, he decided to create a challenge for himself which would
leverage his passion for the arts and take advantage of his many years
of photography experience. He made a conscious decision to jump head
first into the art world with the goal to become an artist, promoter and
curator.Robert rented a studio; started networking with people in the art community; led the SAS Curating team to put together a group show and began writing reviews for ArtBusiness.com. He was enjoying what he was doing, and he knew he had made the right career decision. "But I needed to take it to the next level from a business/monetization perspective," shares Robert. An artist/gallery owner VocationVacation with the owner of Man One in Los Angeles was the perfect catalyst to help him solidify his strategy to successfully transition into the art world. "I received a ton of invaluable advice from Man One which I never would have otherwise been able to gain."
From his VocationVacation experience, Robert was able to put the final touches on his strategy to turn his artistic avocation into a monetized vocation. He built his website from the ground up; developed Photo-Print-Tile-Paintingz (P.P.T.Pz), a new and unique technique which involves digital deconstruction of a digital image and physical reconstruction on a brightly colored canvas, and started showing his work to the right people.
Just over a month after his mentorship with Man One, Robert was able to lock down a solo gallery show at Market Street Gallery for July 2010, which is impressively quick for any artist. Needless to say, Robert is making a major positive impact on the San Francisco art scene. His artwork is on display and available for viewing at his studio, GETBIZI Studio, or on his website.
Computer Programer Becomes Dog Daycare Owner
Toni Cory, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, was
forty-nine and facing the closing of the factory where she had worked as
a computer programmer for over two decades. She knew what she wanted to
do next — and it wasn’t to take a similar job. She wanted to become a
dog daycare and kennel owner.Although Toni had only the slightest idea of what was involved in running this type of business, she began to make plans to buy a piece of property and build a new home with a kennel facility. Toni and her husband put together a business plan and went to the bank for a loan. To their surprise, the bank required they put up all of their money, even their retirement account. The financial risk was high, but they decided to go for it.
In addition to the funding, Toni realized she also needed the chance to walk in the shoes of someone in the business. She found that opportunity on a VocationVacations dog daycare career mentorship at Dog Zone Dog Daycare in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. “Before I went there I could only imagine what it would be like,” says Toni.
In October 2006, Toni opened Almost Home Dog Daycare and Boarding. The business has been well accepted in their community and continues to grow and prosper. The outcome has been well worth the challenges.
Financial Services Manager Becomes Brew Master
Chris George, Slinger, WI, was a technology manager for Bank One when Bank One merged with Chase. It soon became clear - Chris would soon be another unemployed victim of a merger. It was time to start searching for a new job. Chris decided to look for something he was passionate about doing - making beer and becoming a brew master.
Prior to leaving the bank, Chris began brewing beer with a home brew kit his wife gave him. He then joined a brew club. “I wanted to see if I had any talent, and if my beer was any good,” says Chris. The consensus was he had the makings of a good brew master.
Chris now believed he could become a brew master, but did he want to? He decided if he was serious about this new career, he needed a close-up look into the life of a brew master. In 2004, he took a VocationVacation career mentorship with a Wisconsin brew master who gave him the hands-on experience, career consultation and reinforcement he needed to make his decision.
Six months after the merger announcement when his bank job ended, Chris began knocking on the doors of corporate breweries offering to accept any position. When he couldn’t crack into the industry this way, he started a company selling yeast to small breweries. One year later, the soon-to-leave brew master of one of his first customers asked him to consider applying for his position. He did, and in 2007 Chris became the brew master and assistant manager for Riverside Brewery & Restaurant in West Bend, WI.
“Oprah needs to know about VocationVacations. I had such a good time, and most importantly, Tone, Josh and the team at Little Airplane Productions gave me the assurance that I am making the right decision to reinvent myself. Yes, it is a risky move for me and my family, but I have to try. I have such ‘fire in my belly’, it has to happen.”
Joe Green, Ownings Mill, MD
Animator/Digital Designer Vocationer
“I found VocationVacations to be an excellent way to immerse myself in a different world for 2-3 days. My VocationVacation took me to Boise, Idaho for Private Investigating with Mollie Carman and Valerie Agosta of Hanady Investigations. I was a private investigator from minute one! I expected a teacher-student experience but was surprised at my level of involvement in day-to-day cases. I spent time in vehicles with informants, did video surveillance, and actually had a face-to-face meeting with someone being investigated for fraud with the purpose of gathering information! I would encourage anyone to drop the doubt and try a VocationVacation. Since it's only 2-3 days, there's no excuse to not give it a try - it could change your life.”
Rob Smith, Paulsboro, NJ
Private Investigator Vocationer
“Sarah’s energy, professionalism and encouragement made this a great experience. I came away feeling that I can do this!"
Gretchen Giles, Delray Beach, FL
Chocolatier Vocationer
"I can't tell you how satisfied I have been with my investment in VocationVacations. The onsite opportunity I experienced at Crewest Gallery in LA during my VocationVacation was most inspiring. Spending two days with ManOne, I learned the business behind custom mural rendering. My Mentor, ManOne, generously shared his time and talents, openly relating business experiences and the processes involved with finalizing a job. He shared great ideas for self-promotion. In addition, we practiced actual aerosol painting techniques. My reward was his gift of the canvas we worked on as he interpreted my business name Jabiru.Since my VocationVacation, I've opened my own studio, printed new business cards, and have a website (www.jabirudesign.com). I have much more confidence now as I negotiate jobs with clients. And as ManOne suggested, I am networking with other local artists. I am also alert to opportunities for promoting myself and remember ManOne's advice that any experience can lead to possibilities.”
Paula Lewis, Oregon City, OR
Muralist/Gallery Owner Vocationer
"Vocation Vacations offers adults of all ages and backgrounds a rare opportunity to step away from the daily grind and cross a threshold into a new world of possibilities. It's a chance to glimpse into an alternate universe--one that could change your life forever by orienting you to new opportunities."
Amy L. Bernstein
Broadway Producer Vocationer
"My VocationVacation was like going to Disneyland! Learning the cake decorating techniques, including the manipulation and creative design of chocolate, helped me simplify my own existing process. And I had such a wonderful time working with and learning from my Mentors, Jack and Iva, that I was crying when I left."
Margo Hinson, North Hollywood, CA
Chocolatier/Pastry Chef Vocationer
When I saw the massive list of vocations on the VocationVacations website, I crossed my fingers as I scrolled down the list and then yelled in excitement when I saw Private Investigator, my dream job! I could not wait to sign up. Over the years, I had dappled in investigating but I really wanted to see what the pros could show me. I not only wanted to learn, I wanted to share this with my cousin, Carol, who lives in Montana. So Carol and I headed to Boise, Idaho to learn from the best – the Spy Moms, Valerie Agosta and Mollie Carman.
Our adventure was amazing! No fake cases, only real, live investigations. It is not about being nosey and finding out information on people, it is about finding the truth for those who are being duped! That is why it’s my dream job.Valerie & Mollie worked side-by-side teaching us about tracking devices and the information obtained; online background checks; installing a surveillance camera in a child neglect case; and the best was going through the garbage of a suspected cheating spouse and finding incriminating evidence. All of this and much more in just two-days. All I can say is, “WOW – WOW – WOW, what a weekend.”
Valerie & Mollie were the best mentors you could have and lots of fun to boot! Now what, you ask? My ultimate goal after experiencing this great VocationVacation is to become a licensed Private Investigator. Illinois has strict guidelines in obtaining a license but I am well down the path of making that happen upon my retirement from my current career.
Thanks, VocationVacations! What a wonderful way to spend a vacation – learning something new!"
Sue Anderson
Mendota, Illinois
"My VocationVacation experience is one that will stay with me forever. I had the opportunity to learn about and work with Mustangs, two of which were weanlings. Gerry, my Mentor taught me the techniques to work with these wonderful creatures. I came away with confidence that I could adopt and train a young mustang on my own. This is something I've wanted to pursue, but had not been sure that I could do it. Now, I just need to find our retirement property and get started!!! The experience also helped me get to the point of moving past my grief over the death of my own horse, and I'm now deep in the process of finding his replacement." Susie Brown, San Marino, CA

"AMAZING!!! What a complete package, from start to finish, including the coaching sessions. I couldn't wait to roll up my sleeves and ‘dig in’ while working side-by-side with Bridgette Raes and her clients. My mentor was so knowledgeable and easy-going, and she encouraged me to ask questions (which I had plenty of!). I had the instant gratification and benefit of her feedback and expertise. Bridgette was extremely informative regarding the financial and start-up aspects of the business too. On top of all that.....she also managed to make it fun! I had a BLAST!! Thank you VocationVacations®! My VocationVacations® was the first, giant step for me toward creating the life I want. It was incredibly motivating and made me see that I CAN do this!"

"I'd like to take this opportunity to thank VocationVacations® for the experience of a lifetime! My experience with Gerry Thompson and the Kiger Mustangs at SpringWater Ranch in Oregon was better than I could have imagined…The four days I spent with Gerry Thompson and his horses could not have been more perfect. Watching him work with the horses, learning about the history of the Kiger Mustang, and receiving personal riding lessons all helped make the experience unforgettable. His experience and knowledge is extensive, and his way of working with the horses is as much "therapy" for the human as it is for the animal! The trail rides in the beautiful Oregon mountains were safe, yet challenging… I never expected to be able to ride that well in such a short time. I was exposed to everything from the routine of feeding, grooming, tacking and riding to discussions about breeding, trailering and endurance racing. I would recommend this VocationVacation to ANYONE who has an interest in horses - whether they’re a novice wanting to find out if they would like to own a horse or an experienced owner who just wants to go to the "next level" of companionship with their horse. Now I know that someday I WILL have a horse of my own. Thank you again for the wonderful experience."

I had an awesome time doing my Wedding Coordinator ‘job.’ I learned so much to help me in the future with my plans. The whole process was simple and fun. My mentor Mary Dann was fantastic! She was so attentive to me and made sure I really worked to get the most out of my experience. I really felt part of her team, and she taught me some of her tricks. I've been telling everyone about it and look forward to doing another dream vocation."

"VocationVacations has helped me make the move from being a happy enough international banker to a really, really happy dog trainer. I still can't help but smile when I say that...There's just no way I would have had the imagination or the courage to make this shift had it not been for the experience of VocationVacations and the encouragement of the Mentors and the Career Coach I worked with through VocationVacations."David Ryan, Rye, NH

“I knew I would learn a lot, but was surprised and excited to have a clear, specific list of actions steps to take away from this experience. This is something I would not have thought of on my own.”

My VocationVacation certainly increased and affirmed the direction I want to go professionally. It will be important for me to create a two to three year timeline with goals and action steps. Due to my VocationVacation, I realize I can make my dream a reality. I fully enjoyed my entire experience. Mike's hospitality and welcoming environment was evident during my entire two days.”

“Dawn and Dave gave me an incredible hands-on, behind-the-scenes experience even though the bakery was really busy. They took so much time to answer my questions and made me feel really welcome. I learned a ton about what it really takes to run a successful food business and felt especially lucky to observe the operations of a bakery where the owners treat each employee with respect and professionalism. Plus, I helped make (and sample!) red velvet cupcakes, blueberry muffins, and pumpkin whoopie pies."

“I learned a lot about the idea process between a client and the architect and found it interesting watching the interaction between a client, the architect and the design. He had a wonderful way of dealing with his employees and the clients of the hotel."

“Let me first start off by saying the VocationVacations concept and overall program is an excellent idea to provide prospective entrepreneurs the opportunity to be immersed in their dream profession prior to actually committing to it. In my case, I chose the Brew Master program with Hinterland Brewery.
My Brew Master mentor at Hinterland was Joe Karls. Joe’s extensive knowledge of the brewing process and industry along with his great attitude made the experience very educational as well as enjoyable. Being a home brewer for over 16 years I thought I knew what it would be like to be a commercial brew master. I must admit that being immersed in the process gave me an entirely new perspective of what it would be like to be a brew master of my own brewery. The experience I received from this day was priceless. Even if I am unable to realize a brew master profession, my experience from this adventure was well worth it. Joe provided insights on some basic process improvements that have had a positive impact on the overall yield and quality of my home brews. The bottom line is the day I spent with Joe was awesome, and I feel anyone interested in pursuing their dream career should absolutely consider the
VocationVacations program, it is well worth the cost and effort. After the adventure I left with a renewed excitement of starting my own microbrewery and now have a much better idea of where to start and what to expect.”
Scott Marshall, Phoenix, AZ

“I never realized the nose has a memory, and there is a proper way to smell fragrances. Blending fragrances and distinguishing one from another was fascinating. Learning about the differences between commercial and custom developed products helped me better understand marketing aspects and the business in general. This was not only a wonderful experience but an exciting adventure.”

“Danette was extremely open and helpful (as was her staff) which enabled me to get tremendous value out of the experience. Danette even shared her business plan with me which was unexpected. I found many of my ideas and thoughts about getting into this business were validated which made the experience very worthwhile.”
Lauree Nakata, Honolulu, HI

“Seeing the process from start to finish was motivating. The best part was I got to see eight episodes at different stages of production and the combining of these different stages. My mentor let me participate and get hands-on experience which was very exciting. It reinforced that this is possible for me. Reading the final chapter of Brian's book, Test-Drive Your Dream Job – A Step-By-Step Guide to Finding and Creating the Work You Love inspired me to move forward because it helped me outline the next steps of action.”

“Dean created a VocationVacation that allowed me to learn more than I ever thought possible while creating a warm and fun environment. My favorite part of the VV was that my pages and pages of questions were all answered in conversation. There was no “formal” or "corporate" feel to the VV so I was able to learn while thoroughly enjoying myself. I took away an idea of what I want to do in my mind's eye and can actually see it and feel it in physical form because of my VV experience and because of Dean.”

“My mentor, Ron DeStefano, was fantastic. I couldn't believe how incredibly organized he was. I have to say, in all of my years of professional work, Ron is the kindest person I have ever met. He was so nurturing and caring I now realize there is more to life than what I'm currently engaged in, both personally and professionally. I felt my whole "Being" come alive during my experience. That was new for me.”

I came away with a passion regarding writing and travel I have never felt before.”

“Judith answered bare-bones questions about the mechanics of how to live as a working writer -- how to survive as a writer, what it really means to make writing one's livelihood. She also helped me think about my own process and how to build a community of support. She de-mystified the process. I came away empowered with lots of ideas about how to make the transition to the life of a writer.”

It was truly an enlightening experience.”
